Residential Services

The Programming Department includes Residential Services for Arbor, Beacon, Briarwood, Edgewood, Meadowview, Newport, Pineview, Royall, and Woodside Cottages.  Murdoch Center's two statewide programs, BART and  PATH, which are located in Meadowview Cottage, are part of Residential Services.

All residential areas at Murdoch Center provide a warm, homelike environment where both individuals and staff are treated with dignity and respect.  The living areas are designed to meet the person-centered needs and desires of the individuals living there.  Bedrooms and living areas are individualized with personal possessions reflective of the individual's desires and personality.

Most residential cottages provide living and programming space for 48 individuals in 3 units.  The majority of individuals served are adults with severe / profound cognitive challenges.  Many have several health or behavioral needs at the same time.  The primary function of programming is to meet the needs and desires of the individuals, developing new skills while maintaining and refining existing skills.  This is accomplished through teaching efforts in the functional living areas (e.g., daily living, self-help programming), classrooms, recreation, communication, and vocational settings.  All areas comply with the Intermediate Care Facility for the Mentally Retarded (ICF / MR) standards as provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

Dedicated to providing high-quality, person-centered services to 48 men and women, some of whom have multiple challenges, Briarwood Cottage focuses its treatment efforts in all 3 units on goals and activities that promote happiness, physical wellness and fitness, socialization, communication, vocation, money management, and motor coordination.

Edgewood Cottage (photo)

Edgewood is a residential cottage that provides training, habilitation, and health services to 48 individuals, most of whom are adults.  These individuals have a diagnosis of severe/profound mental retardation and many have multiple, additional disabilities.  Edgewood is comprised of two male units and one female unit each housing 16 individuals and is fortunate to have an indoor pool and gym within the cottage.

Meadowview's program consists of two statewide programs, the Behaviorally Advanced Residential Treatment (BART) program, and the Partners in Autism Treatment and Habilitation (PATH) program.

BART

BART serves males, between the ages of 16 and 25, having mild mental retardation and/or other developmental disorders, who have a history of failed treatment placements and/or repeat criminal offenses.  The BART unit was designed to provide a safe, secure, attractive and engaging living environment for up to twelve individuals.  Professional and Direct Care staff receive extensive training in Person-Centered Planning, North Carolina Interventions (NCI), Behavior Intervention procedures, Skill Training procedures, and Positive Interaction procedures.  Rich staff coverage assures safety and enhanced programming 24 hours per day.  Treatment of aberrant behavior in the BART program utilizes a behavior analytic approach.  All programs are designed both to reduce behavioral excesses as well as to accelerate positive social skills.  Treatment also includes training in the areas of self-help, education, communication, vocation and recreation as deemed necessary by the interdisciplinary treatment team.  Behavior programs are carefully integrated across all areas of training.

PATH

The PATH program serves children from ages 6 through 16 from across the state who have autism and serious behavioral challenges.  The PATH program has two components:  The first is an eight-person residential unit for males located in Murdoch's Meadowview Cottage.  The unit also has the capacity for two extra children as therapeutic respite admissions.  The second is a four-person group home (PATH Home) located within 20 miles of Murdoch Center.  The PATH Program operates a public school classroom with a PATH teacher and staff.  Professional Services are available and rich staff coverage assures safety and enhanced programming 24 hours per day.  Treatment of behavior problems in the PATH program utilizes a behavior analytic approach.  All programs are designed both to reduce behavioral excesses as well as to accelerate positive social skills.  Treatment also includes person-centered teaching in the areas of self-help, education, communication, and recreation as deemed necessary by the interdisciplinary treatment team.  Behavior programs are carefully integrated across all areas of training, and are designed with consideration of the individual's eventual return to the parents' home.  Parent and school training are available as needed to enhance successful re-entry to the family home.  In keeping with its goal for short-term therapeutic treatment, the maximum length of stay in the PATH Program should normally not exceed 2 years.

Newport Cottage (photo)

Newport Cottage serves 40 individuals in 3 living units.  One unit is male, one is female, and one is co-ed.  Ages vary from 20 years to 58 years of age.  Behavior management plays a key role in all aspects of programming.  Newport's person-centered philosophy is to assist each individual in attaining the skills and abilities necessary to function as independently as possible in the least restrictive environment.  The program strives to create a safe, homelike atmosphere, providing many opportunities for work, relaxation, and recreation.

Pineview Cottage (photo)

With accommodations for 47 men and women in 3 units, Pineview Cottage is committed to the belief that individuals can reach their maximum potential in a nurturing and respectful environment.

Royall Cottage (photo)

Home to 48 individuals, Royall Cottage consists of 3 units, one co-ed and two for men, one of which is designed to serve non-ambulatory individuals.  The primary function of the person-centered programs at Royall Cottage is to develop new skills while maintaining and refining existing skills.  This is accomplished in a warm, homelike environment where both staff and individuals are treated with dignity and respect.

Woodside Cottage (photo)

With accommodations for 48 men and women in 3 units, Woodside Cottage is committed to the belief that individuals can reach their maximum potential in a nurturing and respectful environment.  This environment offers varied training programs designed to make individuals as independent as possible.
