Specialized Services include Admission / Discharge, Chaplaincy, Transition and Volunteer Services. Admission / Discharge Services Specialized Services coordinates all admissions to and discharges from Murdoch Center. Three types of admission are offered: regular respite, therapeutic respite, and regular admission. Regular respite is primarily used to provide families with a rest or assistance in the event of an emergency such as a death or illness in the family. Therapeutic respite is provided to help with specific medical, behavioral, or educational needs. Multi-disciplinary evaluations and a person-centered goal plan are completed within thirty days of a therapeutic or regular admission. The Admissions / Discharge Coordinator works closely with the Developmental Disabilities staff at the local LMEs and cottage social workers to plan the transition of individuals who live at the Center back to their home community. All referrals to Murdoch Center are voluntary. Requests are made by the individual's guardian and LME staff. The Admissions / Discharge Coordinator also coordinates tours for families and other individuals who want to learn more about Murdoch Center services. For more information or to schedule a tour contact the Admissions / Discharge Coordinator at (919) 575-1000. Chaplaincy Services offers religious nurturing to persons with developmental difficulties who live on the Murdoch Center campus. The Chaplains also provide nurturing to staff who work on the campus. The focus is to provide spiritual guidance, support during crisis situations, moral development and to help people find value and meaning in their lives. The program is non-denominational and accepting of all faiths. Worship services are provided at the Murdoch Center Chapel on Sundays at 9:45 A.M. and Wednesdays at 7:00 P.M. Murdoch ministry also includes bringing "outside" religious communities to Murdoch's campus through visiting choirs, puppet teams, etc. The department seeks out community volunteers to serve as friends and escorts for our individuals who wish to attend Sunday church services in Murdoch's chapel. The department seeks to minister to persons living at the Center by providing a program of camping and vacation experiences. Finally, the department provides educational training for ministerial students seeking to learn about the special needs of our people. Students from Duke Divinity School serve as "Student Chaplains" under the supervision of Murdoch chaplains. The Transition Services Department serves as a liaison function between Murdoch Center, the Local Management Entity (LME) and private providers, to support persons moving from Murdoch back to their communities. Transition Services attempts to identify obstacles to community transition and work with community agencies / individuals to ensure that appropriate community supports are in place. Following discharge from Murdoch Center, Transition Services remains available to provide consultation and technical assistance in an effort to ensure successful placement. The department also monitors outcomes to assess success of the placements. Another function of Transition Services is to provide behavioral consultations for persons with developmental disabilities who reside in the central region of North Carolina. These consultations are intended to assist families and providers with identifying behavioral supports necessary to prevent institutionalization. The Volunteer Services Department at Murdoch Center works diligently to provide tangible and intangible supports to individuals living at the Center in an effort to improve their quality of life. Support from the community is critical to achieve this goal.
